WHAT ON EARTH! indivIDUALS
QUIZ CHALLENGE

The finals for the brand new What on Earth! Individuals Quiz Challenge took place on Tuesday 28th November, For the new individuals quiz, 8–14-year-old brainboxes across the UK also tested their knowledge in a series of online heats before a final 18 quizzers were invited to the live finals.

In the Junior category final, there were three finalists competing for the winning spot:

  1. Toren, aged 9 from Hendrefoilan School (Swansea).

  2. Kostas, aged 10 from Sir Thomas Abney Primary School (Hackney, London).

  3. Mikhail, aged 10 from St Faith’s School (Cambridge).

In the Senior category final, a further three contestants competed to be the winner of their group:

  1.  Stanley Cottrell, aged 14 from Bullers Wood School for Boys (Bromley).

  2. Albert Senton aged 13 from The Harvey Grammar School (Folkestone).

  3. Joseph Mallion aged 14 from Bullers Wood School for Boys (Bromley).

Hosted by author and founder of What on Earth Publishing, Christopher Lloyd, all quiz questions were inspired by topics covered in What on Earth! Magazine including science, geography, history and art and each participant received free access to past digital editions of the magazine to help them prepare. The day began with a lively event presented by Lloyd jammed packed with answers for the first quiz round. Then it was time for the fastest fingers quiz to determine who from the junior and senior groups would get through to the final stages.

Huge congratulations to Mikhail who took the title of 1st place and the overall winner of the Junior category. Mikhail was pleased to have come out on top. “It was very stiff competition but I’m glad I won the first prize.”

And more congratulations are in order for Joseph, who not only placed 1st overall in the Senior category but also took the crown of the overall 2023 What on Earth! Individuals Quiz Champion. Joseph was delighted with the result. “This feels amazing … I’m so happy with the result.”

In a time where it’s more important now than ever to provide children with the critical thinking skills needed to identify what is and isn’t true, Lloyd believes “the whole power of non-fiction is creating content which is factually true for children and best equips them for the future.”

The quiz is free to enter for all 8 – 14 year olds (levels KS2 and KS3) in the UK and travel bursaries are available for the final. There will be two categories, Junior (ages 8-11) and Senior (ages 11-14).
